Artist Statement: Working the land is in my blood. During the Great Depression my ancestors were migrant farmers…struggling to feed their families while tilling the soil. Picking cotton by hand and laboring under the heavy burden of the sack. My husband’s family has also farmed soybeans and cotton for generations. And as long as I can remember, my grandmother, mother, mother-in-law, and myself have always been avid gardeners. I feel most whole while working in my garden, and I love the symbolism that comes with plant life - germination, blooming, dormancy, and new life.
When The Cotton Museum approached me about doing an art exhibition, I couldn’t accept fast enough. After much soul-searching and research, I decided to dedicate this show to honoring the fields, farms and flowers that shaped my roots and inspire my art.
